If you’re thinking about investing a lot of money in preamps, or just wonder what all the hoopla is about with preamps, you should pick up this CD and do some careful listening. To our knowledge this is the first time such a collection of new and vintage preamps have ever been assembled at one time and place for such a test. The liner notes included detailed information about exactly how the tests were done (they had a custom switch made to transparently switch between them) as well as a key as to which preamp is used on each track. The 3D Pre CD, produced by the folks at 3D Audio, contains 67 tracks of vocal and acoustic guitar performances, each through a different mic amp. The results were recorded and a CD was made so you could have a chance to review a bunch of different preamps in the comfort of your own home and/or studio. High end and low end preamps of many makes and brands were all tested with a common microphone and source. A friend of ours recently set up and conducted a very scientific test of microphone preamps. We’ve just received a batch of a very interesting product.
